dysfunctional
dys· func· tion· al
adj. not operating properly: marked by impaired or abnormal functioning
This collection explores the tension between form and function. Each vase begins as a traditionally wheel-thrown vessel, whole, balanced, and utilitarian, before being cut apart and reassembled into something entirely new. Held together by only a few fragile coils of clay, these pieces challenge the idea of what it means to be “functional.”
Though they can still hold water and flowers, their altered forms embody a kind of precarious beauty, a reminder that disruption can coexist with purpose. Dysfunctional grew from my curiosity about what happens when wheel-thrown precision meets the unpredictability of handbuilding, and how destruction can become a form of creation.
